Kids will love Les Ecureuils, one of a series of campsites along the west Atlantic coast in the north Vendee region of France.
The site near St Hilaire-de-Riez is a real family favourite with a great swimming pool that has slides and a lazy river.
Kids will also spend hours riding their bikes and scooters around the network of paths and single-track roads.
The park is a safe haven with entry barriers and perimeter walls to stop children wandering.
Les Ecureuils is about a three-hour drive from St Malo – add an extra hour from Caen – and a mixture of Eurocamp holiday homes, static caravans, tents and tourers.
Eurocamp holiday homes come with decking or a grassed area with a table, chairs, recliners and – the real bonus – a gas barbecue.
The site has a tennis court (hire for three euros an hour), bar (with soft play area), table tennis tables and a site shop.
The shop is limited – there is no fruit and veg – but it is fine for breakfast pasties and essentials and there are a number of hypermarkets within a 10-minute drive.
The bar hosts the usual menu of holiday entertainment – disco, karaoke, bingo etc.
There are plenty of places to hire bikes – an absolute must to explore this cycle-friendly part of France.
The La Pege beach is just over the road and through some sand dunes – under 10 minutes to walk. This is the Atlantic, there were will be wind and waves bit that’s perfect for body-boards and surf-boards.
